Biotechnology has emerged as one of the most innovative achievements in the life sciences and has had an impact on almost every aspects of our lives. TTie conqdete sequencing of human genome in the year of 2001 implies the beginning of biotechnological revolution which leads into the post-genomic era. There is general acceptance that major advances in veterinary medicines over the next several years will results from development through biotechnology. The veterinary sciences in ^ c h advance through biotechnology includes development of diagnostic measures for animal diseases, production of genetically engineered vaccines, therapeutic means and reproductive biotechnology in animals with the specific molecules for growth, development, foreign proteins and disease-resistance. In this lecture, the current progress and future perspectives of veterinary biotechnology are presented and discussed in the aspects of diagnosis, developmait of vaccines and production of transgenic and cloned animals, with special references to Korea. The benefits and limitations of application of biotechnology in the veterinary fields are also discussed
