Characteristics of client-identified important events discovered through use of dolls in Gestalt art therapy

The purpose of this research is to scrutinize the characteristics of client-identified important events as described by those working through dolls in Gestalt art therapy sessions. The subjects for this study were 9 participants in Gestalt art therapy that was currently using dolls for their purposes. To delve into the research question, a survey and a focus group interview were conducted. The collected data for this study were analyzed qualitatively. Interview data were first transcribed and then evaluated using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. According to the data analysis, participants recognized that the therapeutic media ‘dolls’ played a very important role in counseling. The results of the study present four categories of client-identified important events: new discovery of media, efficient psychological exploration, facilitation of counseling relationship, and self-communication activation. These results as well as, the implications and limitations of the study are discussed, and a follow-up study is proposed for more detailed examination.
