곰의 상징적 의미

The Symbol of Bear

곰은 한국인의 생활과 관념 속에 깊이 자리 잡고 있으며, 한국문화 전반에 걸쳐 중요하게 등장하고 있다. 단군신화에 처음 등장하는 동물로 곰은 단군신화의 주요 골격을 형성하였다. 또한 곰은 민간의식이나 설화, 신화의 형태로서 촌재할 뿐만 아니라 고구려시대의 고분 벽화와 같은 유물에서도 발견되었다. 본 연구는 한국 사회문화에서의 신화 및 설화, 민담에서 곰의 상징을 중점적으로 고찰 해보고 일본, 중국 등 신화에 등장하는 곰에 대한 상징은 어떻게 투영되어 나타나는가를 규명하고자한다. 한국인의 생활과 관념 속에 곰은 몸집에 비해 조그마한 눈에 얼핏 보기에 느릿한 행동을 하고, 덩치는 크지만 성질이 온순한 편이라 맹수라기보다 친근한 동물 중 하나이다. 곰은 한국 사회문화에서 뿐만 아니라 여러 각국에서도 신화와 민담을 통해 다양한 상징성을 내포하고 있다. 구체적으로 살펴보면 한국 사회 문화에서 우리 민족의 창조 신화로서 곰은 신성성과 관련하여 중요한 역할을 하였다 . 모신적 존재로서의 신성성을 나타내며 우리 민족의 시조라고 여겨지는 단군의 어머니로서 여성 원형을 나타낸다. 곰은 삼칠일 만에 여인(熊女)으로 변화하여 여신으로 숭상되는 인내성을 상징하기도 한다 . 중국 소수민족의 기원신화와 일본의 곰제례에서도 곰이 등장하여 신성을 상징하고 있다.

Bears are deeply embedded in the lives and ideas of Koreans, and they are emerging in all aspects of Korean culture. The bear was the first animal to appear in Dangun Myth. It formed the main skeleton of Dangun myth. The bears were found not only in the form of folk customs, fables, myths, but also in relics such as tomb murals in the Goguryeo period. This study focuses on the symbol of bear in myths, narratives and folk tales in Korean society culture, and explores how the symbols of bear appearing in myths such as Japan and China are projected. In the life and idea of Koreans, bears behave at a glance with a small eye, compared to their size, and they are big, but their temperament is gentle. Bear has various symbolism not only in Korean society culture but also in various countries through myths and folk tales. Specifically, bear has played an important role in sacredness as a creation myth of Korean people in Korean society culture. It represents a female prototype as a mother of Dangun, which is regarded as a mother tongue of our nation, representing sacredness as a mosquito. The bear changes into a lady in three days and symbolizes patience as a goddess. In the myths of Chinese ethnic minorities and bear ceremonies in Japan, bears are symbolizing the divinity.
