This research is to discuss the characteristics of the newly developed and authorized English textbooks officially by the government for elementary English education in Rep. of Korea. In 2001, only one type of the English textbook, teacher`s manual, and CD-ROM title were developed by Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation(KICE). They were based on the 7th national English curriculum. According to social needs to get more English education, the brand new English textbooks were developed by the partially revised elementary English curriculum in 2007 and 2008 consecutively. Standards emphasized more reading and writing in the curriculum in 2007 and extended class hours pushed textbook developers to include more and diverse activities in the textbooks. As a result, the 14 types of authorized elementary English textbooks by Ministry of Education, Science and Technology(MEST) will be used in elementary school in 2011.
