Effects of science term instruction through semantic mapping on academic achievement and scientific attitude of the elementary school students

The purpose of this study is to figure out effects of instruction of science terms through semantic mapping on academic achievement and scientific attitude of the elementary school students. In advance, two classes of sixth graders at an elementary school were sampled, whichshowed similar ability of science academic achievements and scientific attitude levels in a pre-test. The samples were divided into two groups; an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group has semantic mapping lessons of two hours and semantic mapping modification time of five minutes each class period in a science unit. And the control group had ordinary science classes. The results showed statistically significant difference in science academic achievement between two groups. So the instruction of science terms through semantic mapping implemented gave positive effects upon the science academic achievements ofchildren. In scientific attitude, positive effects were shown on the curiosity, open-mindedness, critical-mindedness, cooperation, voluntariness, endurance and creativity. Based on these results, the instruction of science terms through semantic mapping for elementary student will be helpful for the improvement for science academic achievement and scientific attitude.
