This paper introduces a method of measuring English rhythm using a speech analysis program, Praat. The stress-based rhythm of English can be analyzed by calculating the pair-wise variability index (VI) of consecutive syllables. In order to calculate the VI, individual syllables were annotated in Praat and the duration of each syllable was automatically measured using a Praat script. Then, the duration was converted into normalized duration, which can be used for the calculation of the VI. The higher the VI is, the more stress-based the rhythm is. The method introduced in this paper can be easily used by English teachers and researchers of English phonetics.
