특성화 고등학교 영어교과서 분석: 영어교육 과정을 중심으로

An Analysis of English Textbooks Used in Vocational High Schools: based on the National English Curriculum

본 연구에서는 경남 J시에 있는 13개 특성화 고등학교에서 사용되고 있는 영어 교과서를 분석하여 이 교재들이 영어교육과정에 적합하게 구성되었는지를 조사하였다. 이 특성화 고등학교 가운데 10개교에서는 2종의 일반계 고등학교 교과서를, 나머지 3개교에서는 전공별 전문 교과서(비지니스, 공업, 관광)를 각 1종씩 사용하였다. 분석 결과에 따르면 대부분의 특성화 고등학교에서 사용되고 있는 일반계 교과서는 2종 모두 학습활동이 체계적, 단계적으로 제시되었고 4기능도 균형적으로 다루어져 교육과정을 잘 준수하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 특성화 고등학생들이 필요로 하는 전공소재를 다루지 않는다는 취약점이 있었다. 전문 교과서의 경우는 특성화 고등학교의 전공소재를 집중적으로 다루고 있었지만 각 교과서 별 학습내용과 활동 구성측면에서 차이가 많았고 4기능도 적절히 배분이 되지 않아 교육과정을 일관성 있게 따르지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 특성화 고등학교 영어교과서는 이런 문제점을 심도있게 반영하여 학습자의 필요와 요구에 맞게 다시 제작되어야 할 것이다.

This study examined whether English textbooks, used in 13 vocational high schools in the J city located in Gyeongnam, followed the national English curriculum. Among these vocational high schools, 10 schools used 2 textbooks of humanities while 3 schools adopted 3 vocational textbooks (one textbook per major-business, engineering, & tourism). The findings illustrated that two textbooks of humanities abided by the national curriculum by covering learning activities systematically in a gradual manner, as well as four skills in balance. However, in terms of topics, they did not. On the other hand, three vocational textbooks covered field-specific topics. Regretfully, however, they had disparities in exercise contents and types across three textbooks, which indicated these textbooks did not abide by the national curriculum in a consistent manner. This study therefore suggests English textbooks in vocational high schools be revised based on the learners needs and demands.
