퇴계의 ‘초연함’에 대한 인문적 성찰

Humanistic Reflection on the Detachment of Toegye

이 논문은 퇴계의 초연함에 대한 인문적 성찰을 하려는 것이다. 퇴계의 언행을 제자들이 기록한『퇴계선생언행록(退溪先生言行錄)』(이하 「언행록」)을 보면, 퇴계의 일상 생활에서 체화된 ‘초연함’을 발견할 수 있다.「언행록」을 읽으면 이론-지식-논리보다도 말씀-태도-인격을 통한 ‘살아있는 퇴계’를 만날 수 있다. 특히 「언행록」에서 눈여겨 볼 대목은 <권1>의 ‘마음을 보존하고 성찰함(存省)’, ‘경을 지니는 공부를 논함(論持敬)’,‘덕을 이룸(成德)’, ‘사람을 가르치는 일(敎人)’ 등, <권2>의 ‘학문을 강론하고 변석함(講辨)’, ‘자질과 품성(資品)’, ‘일상생활의 절도(起居語&#40665;之節)’, ‘몸가짐(律身)’, ‘가거(家居)’, ‘향리의 생활(鄕處)’ 등, <권3>의 ‘대인관계(交際)’, ‘음식과 의복의 절도(飮食衣服之節)’, ‘벼슬살이와 물러남(出處)’ 등이다. 이렇게 실제 생활에서 파악할 수 있는 초연함은 그가 중점을 둔 ‘경(敬)’과 연관되어 있으며, 또한 이 경은 맹자의 부동심(不動心)이라는 인생 경계(境界)와 연결돼 있음을 알 수 있다. 맹자의 부동심은 맹자가 말하는 ‘호연지기(浩然之氣)’&#8901;‘용기(勇氣)’ 같은 덕목들과 직결되어 있다. 퇴계의 경이 맹자의 부동심과 연결되어 있다는 점은&#1097399;언행록&#1097400;을 통해서 확인할 수 있는 매우 흥미로운 대목이다. 종래 퇴계 연구에서는 퇴계의‘경(敬)’에 관심이 있으면서도 이 문제에 대해서 그다지 주목하지 않았다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 퇴계의 ‘초연함’의 맥락을 살피면서 그 인문적 의미와 의의를 고찰하고자 한다.

This paper attempts to give a humanistic reflection on the detachment of Toegye. If you look at the book that records Toegye s language and practice, i.e. Toegyesonsengonheanglok(Below onheanglok), you can find a sense of the detachment in everyday life ofea him. You can meet the personality and attitude of Toegye more than the theory and logic by reading the onheanglok. In particular, the places to look at are: ‘Conserving and Reflecting Mind(Jonseong/存省)’, ‘Discuss study to keep reverence(Nonjigyong/論持敬)’,‘Complete virtue(Seong duk/成德)’, ‘Teaching people(Gyoin/敎人)’,‘Teaching and criticizing the discipline(Gangbyon/講辨)’, ‘Qualities and personalit(Japum資品)’, ‘Daily life manual(Gigoemukjijol/起居語&#40665;之節)’, ‘deportment(Yulsin/律身)’, ‘At home(Gago/家居)’, ‘In the village(Hangcho/鄕處)’, ‘Relationships(Gyoje/交際)’, ‘Manual of food and clothing(Umsikoubokjijol/飮食衣服之節)’, ‘Bureaucracy life and retirement(Culcho/出處)’ etc. Detachment of Toegye is based on Reverence. And it is related with not moving mind(budongxin), a detached attitude(haoranzhiqi), courage originate from Mencius. Past studies have not paid much attention to this point. Therefore, this study intends to discuss this point intensively.
