맹자와 깨어있는 자본주의

Mencius and Conscious Capitalism

본 논문은 모든 이해관계자들의 이익을 추구하는 깨어있는 자본주의와 맹자의 與民同樂이 지닌 철학적 동질성을 보이는 것을 목표로 하였다. 깨어있는 자본주의(Conscious Capitalism)의 지지자는 인간의 본성이 기본적으로 선하다고 믿는다. 한편, 깨어있는 자본주의는 흔히 기업의 사회적 책임과 혼동되곤 한다. 그러나 깨어있는 자본주의는 주주 이익의 극대화라는 주주자본주의의 전제 자체를 부정하는 반면, 기업의 사회적 책임(Corporate Social Responsibility)은 주주 이익의 극대화라는 전제를 버리지 않는다. 깨어있는 자본주의에서 기업의 모든 활동은 기업의 근본 목적 아래 일관성 있게 진행되지만, 기업의 사회적 책임은 기업의 근본 목적과 관계없는 사회적 활동을 요구하기도 한다. 맹자는 깨어있는 자본주의와 마찬가지로 모든 이해관계자들의 즐거움을 추구했다. 그는 이를 與民同樂이라고 표현했다. 그러나 모든 이해관계자들의 이익보다 즐거움을 말했다는 점에서 맹자의 철학은 21세기 이해관계자 이론을 앞선다. 또한 깨어있는 자본주의의 주창자들이 감성지능을 중시하는 것과 마찬가지로, 맹자는 감정을 귀하게 여긴다. 善性→四端→與民同樂으로 이어지는 맹자의 사상은 인간을 선하게 여기고 감성지능을 중시하며 모든 이해관계자들의 이익을 도모하는 깨어있는 자본주의의 철학적 기초로 부족함이 없다.

his paper aims to show the philosophical relation between Conscious Capitalism that pursue the benefit of all the stakeholders and Mencius’ “Enjoying together with everyone.” Supporter of Conscious Capitalism believes that human nature is fundamentally good. This capitalism is often confused with Corporate Social Responsibility. The former, however, denies the argument that the corporate should only seek for maximization of the profit of shareholder. On the other hand, Corporate Social Responsibility does not throw away that argument. Also, in Conscious Capitalism, every act of the corporate is consistent under the primary purpose of the firm. However, Corporate Social Responsibility sometimes needs business man to do social activity which is nothing to do with the primary purpose of the firm. Mencius, like Conscious Capitalism, pursue the happiness of all people, and he calls it, “Enjoying together with everyone.” But his theory surpasses Conscious Capitalism in that he used the word “enjoy(happiness)” instead of “profit.” And he, like supporters of Conscious Capitalism, put a great importance on emotion. Philosophy of Mencius suggests the process of “good human nature→emotion→enjoying together with everyone.” And his theory deserves to be the philosophical ground of Conscious Capitalism in 21st century.
