Practice of teaching rhythm through speech by the Orff Approach

  • 225

Carl Orff suggested a teaching method that allows learning of rhythm and its subsequent extension to songs and performance of instruments through real life speech or literary texts including poems of each country. However, since rhythmic accent in Western music is different from that in our language, there are a few difficulties in learning the rhythmic patterns of Western music through our language, and the selection of literary texts that will enable learning of rhythm through speech is not trivial. Thus, this study is aimed at suggesting linguistic characteristics of our language that should be considered when the rhythm is taught through our language, and the practice of teaching rhythm that incorporates such characteristics.
