붉은 오렌지 빛깔을 가진 칼시도니 광석, 카넬리안(마노)으로 만들어진 돌구슬이 기원후 100-668년 사이에 한국에서 크게 유행하였다. 전자현미경(SEM)을 이용하여 한국의 고대 국가 백제, 가야, 신라에서 사용된 카넬리안 구슬의 제조 기술과 사용흔, 전반적인 형태에 대한 분석을 시도하였다. 전체적인 분포 패턴은 지역에서 제작된 돌 구슬과 모양에서 이국적 물질들로 제작된 수입 구슬로의 전환을 보여 준다. 삼국시대 엘리트들이 그들의 부와 사회적 지위, 이념적 신념을 표현하기 위해 이러한 변화를 가져왔을 것이다. 남아시아 및 동남아시아와의 장거리 교환은 구슬의 모양 및 제조 기술을 통해 확인 가능하다. 많은 카넬리안 구슬들은 남아시아에서 유래된 다이아몬드 드릴링(천공) 기술로 제작되었다. 구슬 크기 및 모양, 천공 크기에 대한 정량적 분석은 하나 이상의 공방에서 이 구슬들이 제작되었음을 보여 준다. 다른 정치체들(즉 백제, 가야, 신라) 간 구슬 분포 패턴은 특정 그룹들이나 개인들을 구별하기 위한 수단으로 사용된 구슬모양의 스타일 선택뿐만 아니라 시간 경과에 따른 교역 네트워크의 변화를 반영할 수 있다.
Carnelian is a red-orange form of the stone chalcedony which became prominent from 100 CE - 668 CE. These beads were analyzed by documenting overall morphology, along with details of manufacturing technology and use wear. Scanning Electron Microscope analysis of silicone impressions of drill holes helped to determine specific aspects of drilling and signs of use wear. Overall patterns of distribution include a shift from locally made stone beads and shapes to imported beads of exotic materials. Three Kingdoms Period elites may have made this shift in order to express their wealth, social status and ideological beliefs. Long distance exchange with South Asia and possibly Southeast Asia is indicated via examination of bead shapes and manufacturing technology. Many of the carnelian beads appear to have been drilled using diamond drilling technology that has its’ origins in South Asia. Quantitative analysis of drill-hole size and overall size and shape of the beads indicates that multiple, international workshops were supplying the imported beads to various polities. The distribution patterns of the beads in different polities may reflect changes in trade networks over time as well as stylistic choices of bead shapes used as a means of differentiating specific groups or individuals.
