초등 예비교사의 영어음절 인식 정도와 효과적인 음절 지도 방법

The Primary School Pre-service Teacher s Recognition of English Syllable Structures and Effective Teaching Methods

본 연구는 지필평가로 초등에비교사의 영어단어 음절수 세기 능력을 평가하고, 설문으로 영어 음절구조와 한국어 음절구조에 대한 이해 정도를 분석하여 예비교사의 영어음절에 대한 이해 정도를 파악하고자 한다. 이 결과를 바탕으로 영어 음절지도에서 가르칠 내용과 효과적인 방법을 제안하고자 한다. 평가에 따르면 연구대상자는 20개의 단어 중에서 68.9%(13.78)개 단어의 음절수를 올바르게 답했으며, 두 언어 간의 음절구조 차이에 대한 이해는 하고 있으나 아주 제한적이고 피상적이었다. 제안된 영어음절 지도 내용과 효과적인 지도방법은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국어의 음절구조와 상이한 다양하고 복잡한 영어 음절구조에 대한 이해능력을 늘려야 한다. 둘째, 영어의 이중모음이 두 개의 모음이 아니라 하나의 모음으로 발음하고 인식하도록 시각적으로 제시하고 영어리듬의 기본인 강약의 개념을 도입하여 지도한다. 셋째, 영어음절구조의 가장 중요한 특성인 복잡한 자음군을 점진적인 연습방법과 빨리 발음하기 방법으로 지속적으로 연습시켜야 한다. 영어음절에 대한 적절한 이해와 발음 능력은 영어구사력 및 영어지도능력 향상에 기여할 것이다.

This study aims at suggesting teaching contents and methods on English syllable structures to primary school pre-service teachers by analyzing their ability of counting the syllable numbers of English words and their understanding on the difference between the syllable structure of Korean and English. The results of the evaluation and survey show that the subjects know the syllable numbers of 68.9% words and that the understanding and knowledge on the difference on the syllable structures on the two languages is very limited and superficial. Based on the results the following the three teaching contents and methods are suggested. First, the subjects should improve their understanding on the various and complicated English syllable structures. Second, the diphthongs in English should be presented and practiced as one vowel by using differentiated phonetic symbols in size and glides /y, w/. Also the concept of strong and weak part in diphthongs should be used for the vowel + glide, like /ay/. Third, the consonant clusters, which are the most difficult components in English syllable structure instruction, should be introduced and practiced gradually from less complicated clusters to more complicated clusters. Better understanding on English syllable structures will help the subjects to develop themselves to be efficient communicators in English and effective teachers of English pronunciation.
