Youth Workers and the Course of Youth Work Major in England

이 글은 영국의 청소년지도자 체계와 청소년활동 전공과정을 소개하고자 한다. 글쓴이는 영국 더럼대학교에서 ‘지역사회와 청소년활동’ 석사과정을 공부한 경험을 토대로 청소년활동과정의 전공 과목, 학점, 평가 체계, 현장실습, 뿐만 아니라 영국 청소년지도자의 자격조건, 임금, 대우 수준에 관해 설명한다. 영국은 청소년 활동이 중요하고 가치있는 일이라는 사회적 인식이 자리잡고 있다. 이에 청소년지도자들 또한 높은 급여 수준과 그에 맞는 사회적 대우를 받고 있다. 영국에서 전문 청소년지도자가 되기 위해서는 적어도 대학 수준 이상의 고등교육과정을 이수해야 하고, National Youth Agency라는 민간 청소년 위원회에 의해 청소년지도자 자격을 인정받는다. 이 글은 글쓴이가 현장실습을 했던 영국의 커뮤니티 컬리지와 수감자 자녀 지원단체에 대해서도 소개함으로써 한국에는 존재하지 않는 기관에 대해서도 함께 알아보는 시간을 갖고자 한다.

This report aims to introduce the system of youth workers and the major course of youth work in university in England. The author, who completed a master’s degree course in community and youth work in Durham University, explains the curriculum including the subjects, credit and assessment system, and also introduces the field of work, qualifications, wage and treatment of youth workers. In England, there is social awareness that youth work is important and valuable, so youth workers are given high regard. To be a professional youth worker, one needs to complete the youth work course from a higher education institution. It is a qualification accredited by the National Youth Agency, which is a national charity in England. This also specifically introduces the experiences in youth work placement, referring to community colleges and charity for the families of prisoners. Since both organizations are unfamiliar with the types of youth work in Korea, it would be meaningful to provide information on the organizations and various programs they provide for young people.
