The Nature of Reflective Inquiry in Social Studies

본 연구의 목적은 사회과 교육에서 주창되는 반성적 탐구의 본질을 규명하는 것에 있다. Dewey의 반성적 사고 개념에 기초한 반성적 탐구는 사회과 교육에서 하나의 전통으로 자리매김하며, 문제 해결력 및 의사 결정력 함양이라는 시민성 교육의 새로운 방향을 제시해 왔다. 오늘날 반성적 탐구를 지지하는 학자들은 자신들의 학문적 결에 따라 반성적 탐구를 위한 다양한 접근들을 제안하고 있다. 이러한 시도들에서 반성적 탐구의 본질에 대한 설명은 대부분 생략되어 있거나, 이미 합의된 것으로 전제된다. 그러나, 반성적 탐구의 본질에 대한 심도 있는 이해 없이, 반성적 탐구라고 가정되는 다양한 모형이나 절차들에 대한 관심과 집중만으로는 진정한 반성적 탐구에 도달하기 어렵다. 심지어, 이와 같은 무비판적인 추종은 반성적 탐구의 본질을 왜곡할 소지가 있다. 이에 연구자는 사회과에서 논의되는 반성적 탐구의 본질을 재정립하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 크게 세 가지의 작업을 진행하였다. 우선, 사회과에서 반성적 탐구의 전통을 공식화했던 Barr, Barth, Shermis의 논의를 집중적으로 검토하여 반성적 탐구 전통의 핵심 가정들을 정리하였다. 다음으로, 반성적 탐구 전통과 같은 노선으로 평가되는 다른 사회과 교육학자들의 관점에 터하여 Barr, Barth, Shermis의 논의를 비판적으로 평가하였다. 끝으로, Dewey의 관점을 근거로 하여 반성적 탐구의 본질을 새롭게 제시하였다. 연구자가 수행한 이론적 고찰은 반성적 탐구에 대한 사회과 교육 내부의 관점을 유기적으로 분석하고 있다는 점에서 반성적 탐구를 지향하는 사회과 교육자들에게 하나의 기준점이 될 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to identify the nature of reflective inquiry advocated in social studies education. The reflective inquiry based on Dewey s reflective thinking has become a tradition in social studies education, and it has suggested a new direction to citizenship education such as problem solving and decision making. However, without understanding the nature of reflective inquiry, it is difficult to reach genuine reflective inquiry only with attention and concentration on various models or procedures that are supposed to be reflective inquiries. Therefore, the nature of reflective inquiry discussed in social studies education needs to be redefined. To accomplish this, three tasks were performed. First, the core assumptions of the discussion were summarized based on the intense examination of the argument of Barr, Barth, and Shermis, who formulated the tradition of reflective inquiry in social studies. Next, the argument of Barr, Barth, and Shermis were critically evaluated from the perspective of other scholars who were on the same line with reflective inquiry. Finally, based on Dewey s perspective, the nature of reflective inquiry is newly presented. Although this theoretical review is another point of view that has been established in the limited educational experience, it can be an important reference for social studies educators who pursue reflective inquiry in that it synthetically analyzes the viewpoints of social studies education on reflective inquiry.
