An Analysis of Pre-service Teacher’s Gaze Distribution in Class Observation During Observational Practicum

  • 9

The purpose of this study is to derive implications for meaningful observational practicum through the analysis of the gaze distribution in class observation during observational practicum of the pre-service teachers. For this purpose, 13 pre-service teachers (7 female, 6 male) were used to collect eye movement data from actual class observations using a mobile eye tracking device. The area of interest was classified into teacher, instructional material, students, participants’ territory, and the position of each eye fixation is mapped to the area of interest. And we extracted the student-centered time from the class time and calculated the ratio of the total fixation duration per area of interest in the total class time and the student-centered time. As a result of the study, the gaze distribution about the class-related area of the participants was about 90%, but they were not meaningful attention when analyzing the interview results and gaze movement data collectively. In addition, the gaze distribution of the participants was influenced by the environmental factors of the class, and the gaze distribution of the student-centered time had a high ratio of meaningless gaze.
