Spiritual Need and Spiritual Well-Being in Hemodialysis Patients

Purpose: This study was aimed to identify the degree of spiritual needs and the spiritual well-being in hemodialysis patients. Method: Data were collected by questionnaire from March 13 to 27, 2006. The subjects were 140 patients who were receiving regular hemodialysis treatments in different medical organizations located in the district of G- city. Result: The mean score of spiritual need was 105.1 out of 150 point and the spiritual well-being was 73.8 out of 120 point. There were significant difference in spiritual need according to marital status(F=5.068, p=.008), religion(F=14.453, p=.001) and perceived influence of religion(F=38.989, p=.001). And also there were significant difference in spiritual well-being according to religion(F=10.489, p=.001), and perceived influence of religion(F=24.733, p=.001), and perceived health status(F=12.849, p=.001). There were statistically significant positive correlation between their spiritual need and spiritual well -being(r=.318, p=.001). Conclusion: The level of spiritual well-being in hemodialsis patients was relatively high. Further research in developing strategy to improve the patients spiritual well-being will be required.
