Purpose: This study was done to examine the effect of aroma gargling on halitosis, oral cavity condition and sore throat in orthopedics surgery patients having general anesthesia. Method: The study was done with a non-equivalent control group pre-post test, non-synchronized design. Participants were 50 patients(25 participants for each group) who underwent orthopedics surgery under general anesthesia in a university hospital located in G city. Data were collected from Feb 1st, to March 29th in 2013. The experimental group gargled with aroma gargling solution at 0, 3 and 6hours after arrival in ward. Aroma gargling solution was a blending and diluting solution to mix with peppermint, tea tree and lemon oil in the ratio of 1:2:2. The control group received ordinary oral care. We compared the halitosis, oral cavity condition and sore throat in post operation patients at 0, 1, 4 and 7hours after arrival in ward. Collected data were analyzed using the SPSS/Win 20.0, by frequency, percentage, χ²-test, t-test. Results: Posttest halitosis scores of 1hour(t=8.63, p<.001), 4hours (t=8.36, p<.001) and 7hours (t=7.83, p<.001) after arrival in ward for the experimental group was significantly different from the scores of the control group. Posttest oral cavity condition scores of 1hour(t=3.47, p =.001), 4hours (t=3.21, p =.002) and 7hours (t=3.87, p<.001) after arrival in ward for the experimental group was significantly different from that of the control group. Posttest sore throat scores of 1hour(t=2.09, p =.043) and 4hours (t=2.53, p =.015) after arrival in ward for the experimental group was significantly different from that of the control group. But posttest sore throat scores of 7hours after arrival in ward did not show significant difference between groups (t=1.78, p =.081). Conclusion: Aroma gargling is effective to reduce halitosis and sore throat, and improve oral cavity condition in orthopedics surgery patients who underwent a general anesthesia. Especially, applying the aroma gargling right after arrival in ward has a significant effect. Therefore, it is suggested that aroma gargling can be utilized as an effective method of nursing intervention for patients with orthopedics surgery after general anesthesia.
