Effects of the Introductory Clinical Nursing Practicum on the Perception of the Importance of Nursing Skills, Confidence in Nursing Skill Performance, Self-efficacy in Learning, and Transfer Intension of Nursing Students

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the introductory clinical nursing practicum (ICNP) on the perception of the importance of nursing skills, confidence in nursing skill performance, self-efficacy in learning, and transfer intension of nursing students. Methods: Participants were third graders attending the nursing department from February 2017 to March 2017. ICNP was consisted of a practicum in a practice room and a clinical practicum using the core basic nursing protocol for two weeks. The collected data were analyzed by paired t-test, independent two-sample t-test, and ANCOVA. Results: The results of the study showed that the perception of the importance of nursing skills, confidence in nursing skill performance, self-efficacy in learning, and transfer intension scores improved after ICNP (t=5.62-11.04, p<.001 for all). Conclusion: Therefore, the introductory clinical nursing practicum is an effective intervention to improve learning outcomes in terms of preparation for clinical practicum.
