The Significance and Application of Reflective Practice in Nursing Practice

Purpose: Recognizing the importance of reflective practice in the nursing domain, nursing researchers abroad have performed countless studies on this construct. However, research on reflective practice in Korea is still in the early stages. Therefore, this study aimed to introduce reflective practice to the nursing field in Korea and suggest the effective strategies to successfully apply reflective practice to nursing education and nursing practice. Methods: To this end, we reviewed existing literature on reflective practice both domestic and overseas nursing fields, particularly focusing on major theoretical and empirical studies. A review was performed using both domestic databases including RISS, KISS, DBpia, and NDSL and overseas databases including PubMed, OVID, and CINAHL. Nine domestic papers and 19 overseas papers were selected for a review based on how well the concept of reflection was explained. Results: Based on literature review, we proposed specific methods to improve the use of reflective practice among nurses. We also discussed difficulties or limitations when applying reflective practice to the reality of nursing practice, and provided effective strategies for the successful application of reflective practice to nursing education and nursing practice in Korea. Conclusion: Reflective practice based on critical thinking is essential to improve nursing competency and become a professional nurse. It can play a key role in integrating theory, research, and practice in nursing. We believe that the present study would promote research interest in reflective practice as well as the application of reflective practice to the domestic nursing field.
