Comparison of Knowledge, Attitude and Intention to Donation on Organ and Tissue Donation between Nursing and Non-nursing Undergraduate Students

Purpose: This study investigated knowledge, attitude, and Intention for organ and human tissue donation of college students. Methods: The study subjects were 499 students who majored in the nursing and non-nursing in three universities at one city. The data were collected from self-administerd questionnaire scales of knowledge, attitude, and intention toward organ and human tissue donation. The data was analyzed with descriptive analysis, x2 test and t-test. Results: The percentage of knowledge about organ and tissue donation was 51% and 41%, attitude 76% and 73%, and intention 60% and 58%, respectively. There was a significant difference between the nursing and nursing college students in the knowledge of organ donation (t=3.41, p<.010) and human tissue donation knowledge (t=3.41, p<.010). On the other hand, attitudes toward organ donation (t=1.35, p=.180) and intention (t=-1.16, p=.250), (t=-1.72, p=.090), there was no difference between nursing and non-nursing college students. Conclusion: In order to change the knowledge, attitudes and donation intentions of organs and tissue donation, various experiences and programs related to organ and tissue donation should be provided to university students, especially education for nursing students, which should be integrated into the regular curriculum efforts are required.
