Development and Validation of Empathy Capability Scale

이 연구는 공감의 성차와 연령차를 밝히면서, 인지적/정서적/행동적 공감요인을 포함하는 다차원적인 ‘공감능력’ 척도를 개발하고, 그 척도의 일반화가능성을 검토하기 위한 조사연구이다. 대전/세종/충남에 거주하는 10대부터 50대까지 590명을 대상으로 선행연구들에서 공감능력을 구성하는 것으로 논의된 하위요인들을 포함한 질문지를 구성하여 자료 수집을 진행하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS를 이용하여 신뢰도분석과 요인분석을 거쳐서 공감능력 척도를 개발하였고, AMOS를 사용하여 공분산구조모형분석으로 타당화 검증을 하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 성별에 따른 공감능력의 차이가 나타났다. 남성보다 여성의 공감능력이 높은 것으로 확인되었다. 둘째, 연령대에 따른 공감능력의 차이가 나타났다. 20대 이하가 가장 높고 50대 이후가 가장 낮은 경향성을 보이면서 연령대에 따른 차이를 확인하였다. 이런 연구결과는 공감반응이 성별과 연령대에 따라서 변화할 수 있으며 삶에 바쁜 30대와 50대 남성의 공감능력이 상대적으로 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 공감능력은 인지적/정서적/행동적 공감을 포함하여 3개의 하위요인으로 구성되었고, 각 하위요인은 다시 2개의 하위요인으로 이루어졌다. 인지적 공감은 ‘관점수용요인’과 ‘사고조절요인’, 정서적 공감은 ‘감정표현요인’과 ‘감정몰입요인’, 행동적 공감은 ‘관계형성요인’과 ‘의사소통요인’으로 명명하였다. 끝으로, 3개의 다차원을 제안한 공감능력의 공분산구조모형이 적합한 것으로 확인되었다. 이런 연구결과는 공감을 이해하기 위해서는 다차원적인 공감의 세분화된 측면들에 대한 면밀한 검토가 필요함을 보여주는 것이다.

This survey is to newly develop the multi-dimensional empathy capability scale that was consisted of cognitive/emotional/behavioral empathy factors and to test generalizability of the scale, discovering differences of sex and the ages. Data were collected 590 people from 10 to 50 residents in Daejeon / Sejong / Chungnam province with the questionnaire including to sub-factors related to empathy based on antecedent studies. Reliability and factor analysis for development of empathy capability scale using SPSS and covariance structure modeling for validation of the scale using AMOS were conducted. According to the results of the survey, First, there is the difference of empathy capability according to gender. Empathy capability of Women was higher than Men’s. Second, we confirmed the difference of empathy capability according to ages. Empathy capability were highest in 20s and lowest in 50s. The results of this study show that the empathy may change according to sex and the ages and that it is necessary to help for men in their 30s and 50s who are busy in life. Third, the factor structure of empathy capability was composed of 3 factors including cognitive/emotional/behavioral empathy factors and 2 sub-factor of the factor, respectively. Cognitive empathy can be grouped into view acceptance factor and thinking control factor , emotional empathy emotional expression factor and emotional commitment factor , and behavioral empathy can be grouped into relationship formation factor and communication factor Respectively. Finally, we confirmed the fitness of covariance structure model that suggested 3 dimensional empathy capability scale was good. The findings of this study show that a closer examination of the refined multi-dimensional aspects of empathy is needed.
