동화와 스토리텔링을 활용한 초등영어과 교수·학습모형 탐색

A Study on the Educational Significance of Children’s Stories and Storytelling

본 연구는 동화와 스토리텔링이 초등영어교육에 미치는 교육적 효과를 살펴보고, 동화와 스토리텔링을 활용한 교수․학습의 효율적인 모형을 모색하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위하여 초등 학습자 중심 국내․외 동화와 스토리텔링 활용 관련 연구 자료를 수집하여 분석하였다. 이를 통해 발견한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 동화와 스토리텔링은 초등영어 학습들에게 유용한 도구로서 활용될 수 있다. 두 번째로, 읽기, 쓰기, 듣기, 말하기 실력향상에 도움을 제공하며 영어 학습에 대한 흥미와 동기도를 높여 학습을 촉진하는데 효과적이다. 세 번째로는 실질적 영어능력 향상과 학습에 긍정적인 효과를 불러일으킨다. 네 번째로 학습자들의 창의력, 비판적 사고와 타 문화에 대한 이해도를 높이는데 효과적이다. 끝으로, 분석한 결과를 토대로 영어교사가 활용할 수 있는 동화와 스토리텔링 활용 수업 모형을 제시하였다.

The purpose of this current paper is to investigate the educational significance of children’s stories and storytelling in teaching English in an elementary school, and to make some suggestions for further improvement. In order to find out any significance, previous research studies on the use of children’s stories and storytelling were collected and analyzed. Based on the findings, the lesson design with children’s stories and storytelling was addressed to assist pre-/ and in-service teachers in teaching English in a public elementary school. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1) children’s stories and storytelling can be utilized as a good resource in teaching younger ELLs to meet its intention, 2) children’s stories and storytelling can be a vital role as a motivating and interacting vehicle in English class, 3) children’s stories and storytelling can provide younger ELLs with positive effects to escalate English proficiency, 4) children’s stories and storytelling can encourage younger ELLs to expand their creativity, critical thinking skill and cross-cultural understanding.
