Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the general hospital nurses perception of the task performance and importance of paid caregivers. Methods: The participants were 195 nurses working at three general hospitals. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire from November 4 to 13, 2013, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA with SPSS 20.0 program. Results: 81.5% of nurses in general hospitals perceived the necessity of paid caregivers. Difficulty in delegating tasks to paid caregivers was reported by 63.6% participants. Difficulty in delegating the task to paid caregivers because of a lack of time and resources was reported by 87.2% participants. The nurses rated the paid caregivers’ task performance at 3.59 out of 5.00; the degree of importance of paid caregivers was rated 3.81 out of 5.00. The areas of high nurses’ perception about task performance of paid caregivers were infection control aids (4.71±0.45), eating aids (4.20±0.73), body cleaning aids (4.18±0.77), and movement aids (4.16±0.77). The areas of high nurses’ perception about task importance of paid caregivers were infection control aids (4.71±0.45), movement aids (4.24±0.75), eating aids (4.17±0.76), and body cleaning aids (4.16±0.73). Conclusion: The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for the development of standard work instructions for the nurses for the guidance and supervision of the work activities of paid caregivers in the future.
