Depression in Burn Patients

  • 24

Forty-one patients admitted with 3rd degree burn at Chonnam University Hospital were surveyed from February to March in 1997. Beck depression scale, Osgood semantic differential scale, and Roesenberg self-esteem scale were used to measure depression, body image and self-esteem, respectively. The data were analysed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and stepwise multiple repression. The range of depression was 3-36 with an average of 13.8. The depression had negative correlation with body image and self-esteem. The more the number of skin grafts and amount of skin surface burnt, the higher the depression. Taken together, the depression may be accounted for by the number of skin grafts, elapsed time after the burn, self-esteem, body image and the amount of skin surface burnt.
