A Study on the Levels of Health Knowledge and Self-care Activities in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

This study was done for the purpose of investigating the degrees of health knowledge and self-care activities, and the relationship between these variables in patients continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. The subjects of study were 70 out-patients receiving the follow-up care of CAPD at out-patients renal department of C university hospital in Kwang-ju. The data was gathered from July 12 to August 30,1993 through interviews by questionnairs. The data was analysed by t-test, ANOVA and pearson correlation coefficient The results of this study were summerized as follows; 1. The mean score of health knowledge was 7.60 points out of 10.0 points. 2. Incorrect answer of subjects in knowledge items showed higher freqencies in order of the food that patients have to restrict during CAPD(70.0%) , the principle of CAPD (45.7%) ,and the function of kidney (44.3%) . 3. In general and treatment-related characteristics, the factors influencing the health knowledge were religion (F=3.25, p=.0173) and degree of satisfaction on CAPD (F=4,20, p=.0191) . 4. The mean score of self-care activities was 52.0 points out of 76.0 points. In comparison of the items on self-care activity level, the mean score of self-care activities showed lower level in order of daily blood pressure cheking 1.76 , daily input and output recording 1.84 , the body temperature checking when showed symptoms of peritonitis 1.84 , and daily body weight checking 2.09 . 5. The level of self-care activities depending on the general characteristics were not significantly different. the treatment-related factors influencing the level of self-care activities were the duration of dialysis (F=5.55, p=.0007) , the number of experiences of peritonitis (F=2.85, p=.0307) ， the degree of satisfaction on the CAPD (F=2.04, p=.0488) , the time(F=2.46, p=.022) , and the number of times (F=2.31 , p=.044) they were taught about CAPD before dischage and the degree of satisfaction on the CAPD education (F=3.99, p= .0113) . 6. The health knowledge score showed a positive correlation with the level of self-care activities which was not statistically significant(r=.1698, p=.253).
