A Study on Nursing Professional Attitudes and Clinical Competency of Nursing Students

This study was performed to analyse the level of nursing professional attitudes and clinical competency of nursing students. The subjects of this study were 190 senior nursing students in 2 nursing colleges in M city. The data were collected from November 28th to December 8th, 2000, using questionnaire. The instruments used were the Nursing Professional Attitude Scale developed by Alfred T. Fingerhut and adapted to the Korean situation by Ryu, Kim, Lee, Park, and the Clinical Competency Scale developed by Lee. The data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient, using the SPSS program. The results of the study were as follows ; 1. The mean score for nursing professional attitudes was 111.36 points, with the maximum score at 150 points. 2. The mean score for clinical competency was 188.69 points, with the maximum score at 276 points. 3. Nursing professional attitudes showed significant difference in the satisfaction level of nursing discipline(F=3.88, p=.022) and satisfaction level of nursing practice (F=3.79, p=.024) of nursing students. 4. Clinical competency showed significant difference in interpersonal relationship (t= 3.64, p=.000) of nursing students. 5. Nursing professional attitudes and clinical competency were positively correlated (r=.295, p=.000) , In conclusion, this study found that the more positive nursing professional attitudes, the higher clinical competency, Therefore further study is needed to examine the factors affecting nursing professional attitudes and clinical competency.
