The Health State and Stress Level of the Family Caregiver of Chemotherapy Patients

This study is designed to investigate the stress degree and health state in family of caregiver of chemotherapy patients. This subjects have been studied by researching 100 families caregiver who weretaking care of chemotherapy patients at admitted hospital in Gwangju city. The research tools are a Gwang-hee Yang(1 998)’s stress questionnaire(4 point scale) and health questionnaire(4 point scale) developed by Dong-he Kim(1998). The data has been collected through direct interview with questionnaire in Gwangju city, the Republic of Korea from 15th February to 15th March 2001. The data is analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and Scheffe’ test using SPSS/PC +. The results of this study are summarized as followings: 1. The mean score of the stress level is 2.20 and the health state was 1.54 (Maximum : 4). 2. The stress level of family caregiver is shown significant difference according to age(F=4.69, p=.002), gender(t=10.76, p=.001), degree of care(F=4.55, p=.013), availableness of 2’nd caregiver(t=5.66, p=.019). 3. The health state of family of caregiver is shown significant difference according to gender(t=14.39, p=.000), the level of education (F=3.33, p=.023), monthly income of family(F=2.62, p=.039), the responsibility for living cost(F=3.30, p=.041). 4. There is a positive correlation between the stress level and the health state (r=.617, p=.000). Investigating above results, there is a high correlation between stress level and the health state of family caregiver of chemotherapy patients. And the stress level and health state are shown significant difference according to general characteristics of family caregiver. 50 There is a need to access nursing family caregiver according to those results.
