A Study of Smoking Related Knowledge and Intention of Senior Graders in Elementary Schools

The purpose of this study was to investigate the smoking status, smoking behaviors and their related factors of the senior graders of two elementary schools in a city. The subjects were 200 children. The measurement tool consisted of 38 questions; 17 for socio-demographic and smoking-related characteristics; 6 for smoking intention and 15 for smoking-related knowledge. Internal consistency of questionnaire for smoking related intention was Cronbach s alpha 86. The survey was conducted with help of school nurses from July 4th to 18th, 2003. The data was analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and Chisquare test with SPSS 10.0 program. The results were as follows: 1. About 11.5% of the children have ever smoked. The mean age of the smoking experiences was 9.14. 2. The mean scores of the smoking-related knowledge were 8.7 out of 15 points. 3. The mean scores of the smoking intention were 7.0 out of 24 points. 4. The mean score of the smoking-related knowledge was lower (p= .002) in the group of those who rarely communicate with their parents than those who frequently communicate with their parents. The mean score of the intention of smoking was higher in the 6th graders (p= .007) than any other graders. 5. Those who had best friends smoking, does not concern other s smoking, and have no plan to smoke in the future had higher knowledge about smoking but not significantly so. 6. Those who does not care some ones smoking, and had plan to smoke when grown up, and ever smoked had significantly high scores in smoking intention (p=001, p= .030, p= .006) 7. The smoking experience of children were related with best friends smoking and their father s smoking (X =9.009, p= .003). From above results, the elementary school children s trial age of smoking become more earlier than other studies. So the smoking prevention education program must start from elementary school and up-grade eventually.
