School Nurses’ Recognition about Mental Health Problems of Students

This study was done to identify the recognition of school nurses about mental health problems of students. The total subjects of this study were 70 school nurses who worked in elementary, middle and high schools located in G city and J province. The data were collected from January 6 to 8, 2004, and analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, ANOVA using the SPSS/WIN 10.0 Program. The results were as follows : 1. The recognition of school nurses about mental health problems of students 1) Attention deficit was the highest in types, lack of academic skills, physical symptoms, and substance abuse were in order. 2) Child rearing attitude and family environment was the highest in reasons, stress and psychological conflict, inadequate counseling and management about mental health problems, school performance focused educational environment, genetic vulnerability, and trauma or spirituality were in order. 3) 5.7%(2.16) in class had mental health problems, 2.5%(0.97) required psychiatric evaluation, and 1.6%(0.6) were referred to or recommended psychiatric evaluation. 4) The management was mainly done by school nurse, counseling center, school counselor, teacher, parent, and psychiatric clinic were in order. Prejudice of parents about psychiatric services was the main barrier in psychiatric referral, difficulty in referral, and ability of teachers were in order. 5) The regular mental health education was the highest in requirement, counseling material and training, improvement of school performance focused school environment, specific program for mental health problems, and connection with counselors and consultants were in order. 2. Differences of recognition of school nurses about mental health problems of students according to school and age 1) There were significant differences on the lack of academic skills, conduct behavior, and substance abuse according to school. The lack of academic skills, and conduct behavior were high in middle school, and substance abuse was high in high school. There were significant differences on attention deficit, the lack of academic skills and conduct problems. The recognition of fifty-age school nurse was the highest in a mental health problems. 2) There was significant difference on the family environment according to school. The genetic vulnerability, and trauma or spiritual factors were main causes in senior. Inadequate counseling and management about mental health problems was main cause in junior. 3) High school is highest in frequency about mental health problems, middle and elementary school were in order. According to the above results, this study can be used as a basic material to develop education and training program for school nurses.
