The Professional Self-concept and Job Satisfaction of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses and General Psychiatric Nurses

This study was the descriptive investigation to identify the difference of the professional self-concept and job satisfaction between psychiatric mental health nurses and general psychiatric nurses. The subjects of the study were 71 psychiatric mental health nurses and 120 general psychiatric nurses, who are working at a psychiatric hospital, a psychiatric mental health center, and public health center in Gwangju City and Chonnam Province from January 16 to February 10, 2002. For measuring the professional self-concept, the questionnaire which was developed by Arthur (1990) and was adapted by Sohng & Noh (1996) was used. And for measuring the job satisfaction, the questionnaire which was developed by Siavitt, Dinash & Stamps (1978) and was adapted by Kim (1998) was used. The data were analyzed by t-test and Pearson s Correlation Coefficient. The findings were as follows: 1. In the difference of the professional self-concept of psychiatric mental health nurses and general psychiatric nurses (the maximum average score was 4), each score was as follows: 2.88 for the group of psychiatric mental health nurses; 2.69 for the group of general psychiatric nurses. There was a significant difference statistically. 2. In the difference of the job satisfaction of psychiatric mental health nurses and general psychiatric nurses (the maximum average score was 5), each score was as follows: 3.32 for the group of psychiatric mental health nurses; 3.21 for the group of general psychiatric nurses. There was no significant difference statistically. 3. In the result of the relationship with the professional self-concept and the job satisfaction, it was found that the higher the professional self-concept, the higher the job satisfaction for all groups of psychiatric mental health nurses (r= .498, p<.0001) and general psychiatric nurses (r=.581, p<.0001).
