A Study on the Level of Recognition and Performance of the Clinical Nurses about the Management of Nosocomial Infection

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions of nosocomial infection and provide the fundamental data for the prevention of the infection with analysis on the level of recognition and performance of the clinical nurses. Method: Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires from 368 dinical nurses in one University hospital in G city. Result: 1) The mean score of recognition for management of nosocomial infection obtains 4.5 out of a possible 5. By domains, hand washing management get the highest, and followed respiratory tract infection management, urinary tract infection management, and fluid therapy & catheter management. 2) The mean score of performance for management of nosocomial infection obtains 4.2 out of a possible 5. By domains, hand washing management get the highest, and followed respiratory tract infection management, urinary tract infection management, and fluid therapy & catheter management. 3) In all domains, the mean scores of recognition are highest than those of performance. In particular gap between recognition and performance is remarkably wide domain of fluid therapy. 4) The mean scores of performance go up in direct proportion to the mean scores of recognition. Conclusion: It is required to develop an educational program for the effective management of hospital infection through the results of this study.
