Analysis of Nursing Diagnoses Perceived by Nurses of Orthopedic Surgery Nursing Unit — Using the NANDA nursing diagnoses taxonomy || —

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the frequency of nursing diagnosis according to domains and classes, and priority of nursing diagnoses perceived by nurses in orthopedic surgery nursing unit. Method: For this purpose, the NANDA nursing diagnoses taxonomy II was used. Data were collected from 69 nurses at 5 hospitals in Gwang-ju and Chonnam region from June to July, 2003 using 5 point Likert scale. Result: The domain of nursing diagnoses showed in order of safety/protection (2.87), comfort (2.78), self-perception (2.63), perception/cognition (2.54) and coping/ stress tolerance (2.49). The class of nursing diagnoses showed in order of physical comfort (3.61), belief (3.54), communication (3.53), post-trauma response (3.40), thermoregulation (3.29) and violence (3.29). The priority of nursing diagnoses was in order of risk for infection (4.57), acute pain (4.54), constipation (4.39), chronic pain (4.35) and impaired walking (4.25). Conclusion: In conclusion, the NANDA nursing diagnoses toxonomy II was found to be a general and comprehensive classification system having application to orthopedic surgery nursing unit.
