Acquisition of Inalienable Possessive Expressions in English

Languages like Korean allow bare body-part nouns and bare kinship nouns in the inalienable possession structures, while languages like English require a pronominal possessive to express inalienable possession. Since such cross-linguistic differences are expected to affect the interlanguage grammar, this paper explored the production data from Korean speaking learners of English. The results show that lower proficiency learners were influenced by their L1, while higher proficiency learners constructed their interlaguage much closer to the target language.
