제도권 학교를 떠나 대안학교를 선택한 부모들: Deleuze와 Guattari의 유목주의 이론에 근거한 내러티브 탐구

Nomads Converting the Education Assemblage: Narratives of Parents who Left Public Schools

본 연구는 제도권 학교를 떠나 경기도의 한 초등 대안학교를 선택한 부모 다섯 명의 내러티브를 탐구한다. 본 연구는 Deleuze와 Guattari의 유목주의 이론을 사용하여 연구 참여자들이 제도권 학교를 어떻게 경험했고, 왜 그 곳을 떠났으며, 대안학교로 이동함으로써 학교교육에 대한 의미를 어떻게 (재)구성하는지 분석한다. 개별 인터뷰를 통해 자료 수집을 하였고, Riessman(2008)의 내러티브 분석 방법을 사용하여 수집한 자료를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 연구 참여자들은 제도권 학교를 욕망의 흐름이 통제되며, 학교, 학생, 교사, 부모, 배움과 가르침 등의 의미들이 정상성 원리에 따라 코드화되는 ‘홈 패인 공간’으로 인식하였다. 둘째, 연구 참여자들은 억압적이고 위계적인 체제에서 탈주하여 새로운 형태의 삶을 찾아 이동하는 ‘유목민’되기를 선택하였다. 기존의 교육 담론과 제도에 순응하지 않고 대안을 모색하는 연구 참여자들의 모습은 대항정치적 의미를 갖는다. 셋째, 연구 참여자들이 인식한 대안학교는 이상적이고 완벽한 공간이 아니지만, 탈 중심적이고, 개방적이며, 유동적인 ‘리좀형 체계’의 특성을 보였다. 연구 결과는 현 교육 배치가 제한적이라는 것을 보여주는 동시에 변화 가능성을 제시한다. 마지막으로, 본 연구가 제공하는 학문적·실천적 시사점이 무엇인지 논의하며, 향후 연구 방향을 제시한다.

This study aimed to understand, through a theoretical framework informed by Deleuze and Guattari’s nomadology, experiences of five parents who chose an alternative elementary school in South Korea for their child’s education. Narrative forms of qualitative inquiry provided the framework for methodology in this study. In-depth interviews were conducted with individual participants to construct data. Thematic, structural, and dialogic/performance analysis methods were utilized for data analysis. The results were as follows. First, the research participants perceived the public schools they left as a striated space where meanings of students, teachers, families, learning, and teachings were stabilized and even fixed. Second, the research participants chose to become a nomad resisting settled patterns of thoughts and lives. Desiring for a smooth space, they moved to the alternative school. Third, while acknowledging its possibilities and limitations, the research participants attended to some rhizomatic aspects of the alternative school. This study discussed how that the current education assemblage might be limiting and, yet, not fully determined and what might prompt its conversion. Implications for research and practice were also discussed.
