Differences between Low- and High-Proficient College Students in Reading Strategy Use

본 연구는 교양영어 독해수업을 수강하는 학생들과 영어교육 전공 학생들을 대상으로 영어수준별로 상⦁중⦁하 학생들이 사용하는 독해전략 사용에 관한 차이를 분석한 연구이다. 연구결과 영어수준별로 독해전략의 사용 빈도에 차이가 나타났으나 수강하는 독해반의 성격에 따라서는 유의미한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 영어수준별 분석에서는 7개 전략사용에서 상위집단 학생들은 ‘모르는 단어가 있으면 문맥으로부터 의미를 추측한다.’ ‘지문을 읽기 전에 도표를 훑어본다’ ‘지문을 읽다가 내가 이해한 것을 점검한다.’ 는 전략을 빈번하게 사용한 것으로 나타났으며 이 가운데 ‘지문을 읽기 전에 도표를 훑어본다’ ‘지문을 읽다가 내가 이해한 것을 점검한다.’ 는 두 개의 전략만이 다른 집단과는 구별되는 집단 간 유의미한 차이를 나타냈다. 이러한 연구결과는 상⦁중위 집단은 나름대로 자신들의 독해학습전략을 사용하고 시도해 봄으로 자신들에게 적합한 독해전략을 발견해 가는 과정이고 학습자가 전략 사용에 능숙하게 되면 독립적인 능동적인 학습자가 될 수 있을 것이다. 또한 이러한 독해전략은 학습자가 독해 지문을 해결하는 과정에서 지문내용을 파악하고 이해하려는 노력으로 독해능력에도 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것으로 기대할 수 있을 것이다.

The study investigated differences in English reading strategies that 89 college students are using while reading a passage in English. To gather data, the students with three different proficiency levels were asked to fill out a reading strategy checklist. The findings demonstrated that the high proficient students used frequently two different kinds reading strategies, ‘looking at the graph and chart’ and ‘checking what they understand’ strategies out of seven reading strategies by significant margin, while there were no differences five reading strategies. In addition, there was no significant difference in reading strategy use whichever course the students were taking. It means that it takes time to find and build students own strategies, even though they are aware what is effective reading strategy in comprehending a passage. This study suggests that using reading strategies while reading a English passage be a process to find and build students own strategies that are most suitable and contributable to their English learning.
