토마스 모어의 『유토피아』에 나타난 교육적 이상

모어가 살던 16세기 영국은 봉건질서가 붕괴되고 근대국가로 넘어가는 과도기였다. 이러한 상 황 하에서 소위 ‘옥스퍼드 개혁가’로 불리는 그는 『유토피아』를 통해 튜더 왕조의 사회적 병폐의 원인과 이를 해결하기 위해 바람직한 사회적 모델을 제시하고 있다. 그 중에서도 유토피아인들의 교육제도에는 개혁가로서 사상가로서의 모어의 교육관이 잘 나타나 있다. 이 글의 목적은 이상사회에 나타난 제도의 성격이 무엇인가를 고찰함으로써 북방르네상스를 대표한 영국의 대표적인 지식인인 모어의 교육적 이상과 시대적 과제를 교육사적 관점에서 이해 해 보고자 한다.

This article deals with the educational ideal in Thomas More s Utopia. Utopia deserves a place in the intellectual history of Europe. It represents the critical spirit and reform thought of Tudor age. The 16th century, a great turning point in history, was a remarkable period in the history of utopian thought. In this article, I have tries to do justice to the aspects of More s importance for the educational history. I have set out the educational ideas of Utopia and offered an interpretation of its message. And I have sketched the educational system in Utopia.
