In this article, we will thoroughly analyze J. C. F. Schiller s conception of play drive (der Spieltrieb) which is a central, and itself ingenious, concept in Schiller s aesthetics. Such analysis will lead us to expose the most original aspect of Schiller s aesthetic in terms of the ideal of true freedom. Schiller identifies play drive as an interaction between two drives: the sense drive and the from drive . We will analyze and explain Schiller s definition by showing the conflicting aspects of the sense drive and the from drive and show how such confliction could be taken consistently. We argue logically that only in the light of restriction and reconciliation of drives of sense and form, Schiller s concept of play drive can be interpreted as the ideal of true freedom. Through this article, we can overcome much biased interpretations of Schiller s aesthetics. Moreover, we can gain abundant meaning of such a new interpretation. At last, Schiller s aesthetics may be viewed as providing abundant materials for meaningful and serious reflection on our contemporaries who are still seeking freedom.
