양육 경험을 통해 본 어머니의 ‘어린이다움’ 인식

Mothers’ perception on the notion of childhood embedded in their child-caring experiences

본 연구의 목적은, 어머니들이 육아 경험을 토대로 ‘어린이다움’을 어떻게 인식하는지를 조사하는 것이다. 학령전기 유아를 자녀로 둔 어머니 6인을 대상으로 심층 면담을 실시하였다. 심층 면담으로부터 얻은 전사 자료를 순환적으로 읽으면서 사례 간의 패턴을 분석하고 그 결과를 추출하였다. 분석 결과, 어머니의 육아 경험을 토대로 구성된 ‘어린이다움’에는, 전문가의 설명과는 다른 어린이, 상황을 읽고 적응하는 어린이, 자신만의 방식을 가진 어린이, 웃음으로 표현하는 어린이, 시․공간이 다른 어린이로 나타났다. 어머니들이 희망하는 어린이는 불의나 부당함에 대해 자신의 목소리를 낼 수 있는 어린이이며 공동의 선과 타인을 고려하는 어린이이다. 이러한 연구 결과는, 기존의 발달심리연구 영역을 벗어나는 것이며 어린이를 이들의 삶이 영위되고 있는 일상 속에서 이해돼야 함을 시사한다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how mothers with young children construct the notion of childhood in terms of their daily experiences of child-care. The results have been deduced from the coding patterns in the process of circular reading data. As a result, the notion of childhood includes the idea that the characteristics of children may be different from developmental theories: children can understand their dialogic situations and handle it in their own ways; they laugh for their own purposes, and should have their own time and space. The concept of childhood that mothers desire is that children can raise their own voices against injustice and unfairness and take part in the dispensation of justice. These results imply that the notion of childhood needs to be understood in children’s daily lives where it belongs.
