A Study on the Structure of Three Kingdoms Period Horse Armor

마갑은 전마구(戰馬具)의 일종으로 전투 시 말을 보호하는 방호구(防護具)이다. 국내에서는 1980년대복천동고분군에서 확인된 이후 현재까지 지속적으로 자료가 축적되어 오고 있다. 그 출토량은 전 세계적으로 보아도 이례적이다. 그럼에도 이에 대한 연구는 비교적 미진한 편이다. 그 이유는 마갑의 복잡한 구조에 있다. 소찰로 이루어진 갑주의 특성상 출토상태가 좋지 않아 연구의 어려움을 더한다. 최근쪽샘 C10호묘에서 완전한 상태의 마갑이 출토되었다. 또 마갑총이나 지산동 75호묘 등 출토상태가 양호한 자료들도 축적되고 있다. 이를 토대로 마갑의 구조복원을 시도하였다. 먼저 소찰의 평면형태를 통해 그 사용위치를 밝히고 투공배치를 검토하여 소찰을 분류하였다. 다음 연결기법을 검토하여 수결기법을 분류하였다. 또 부위별로 사용된 소찰을 조합하여 소찰구성을 파악하였다. 출토상태를 통해 각 부위별 마갑의 형태를 복원하고 분류하였다. 각 부위별 마갑의 유무를 통해 마갑의 구성도 살펴보았다. 그 결과 마갑은 지역성을 반영하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 마갑이 출토된 지역명을 반영하여 ‘부산형 마갑’, ‘옥전형 마갑’, ‘경주형 마갑’, ‘함안형 마갑’을 설정하였다. 이 마갑들은 서로 제작기술이 공유되고있어 유기적인 관계임을 밝혔다. 마지막으로 시기별 마갑의 전개양상을 살펴보았다.

This paper reviews the structure of horse armor. Identifying the structure of horse armor is not an easy task because horse armor was completed by connecting hundreds of lamellar pieces. Due to this, the study of horse armor has been relatively limited but it must be noted that the study of its structure is a key element for stimulating research on horse armor. Examples that can reveal the original form of horse armor have recently been discovered, such as the example from Jjok-saem C10. Utilizing such information, an attempt to restore the structure of horse armor is made in this paper. Firstly, classification was undertaken by examining the shape of the lamellar pieces and the arrangement of their holes. Based on the results, commonly observed lamellar combinations were established and identified as the typical lamellar composition. It was possible to reconstruct horse armor shape by analyzing the results of excavation. By identifying the presence or absence of horse armor for the different body parts, the structure of a suit of horse armor could be established. Through the study, it was possible to confirm that there four main types of horse armor were used during the Three Kingdoms Period. As each type demonstrated regional characteristics, they were referred to as ‘Busan-style’, ‘Okjeon-style’, ‘Gyeongju-style’ and ‘Magapchong-style’ Horse Armor. The different types of horse armors seem to have shared production techniques.
