신라 부착토우 부장 무덤 연구 — 5-6세기 경주 중심지역 무덤과의 관계를 중심으로

A Study of Clay Figurine Attached Pottery-deposited Burials in 5th to 6th Century Central Gyeongju, Silla

신라 부착토우의 조형적 특징과 상징적 의미에 대해서는 많은 연구가 이루어졌지만, 부착토우 출토 유적에 대한 보고서가 제대로 간행되지 않아 그 출토 맥락에 대한 연구에는 별다른 진전이 없었다. 그러나 최근 경주 쪽샘유적에서 부착토우가 다수 발견되고 그 출토 맥락이 자세하게 보고됨으로써 신라 물질문화의 일부로서 부착토우가 지녔던 의미에 대한 보다 구체적인 연구가 가능해졌다. 특히 기존에 알려진 경주 황남동 석곽묘군에서와 같은 석곽묘뿐만이 아니라 적석목곽묘에도 부착토우가 다수 부장된사례가 쪽샘 유적 발굴을 통해 알려졌다. 이에 부착토우가 부장된 적석목곽묘와 석곽묘 사이의 차이를 비롯하여 부착토우 부장 무덤이 당시 경주중심지역 무덤의 일부로서 지녔던 일반성과 특수성을 이해하기 위해 기존에 산발적으로 이루어진 부착토우 부장 무덤에 대한 기록과 연구를 쪽샘유적 발굴 성과 및 그를 반영한 최근의 연구와 비교하여 분석하였다. 이를 통해 부착토우가 부장된 무덤은 그 묘제와 상관없이 철기류, 특히 무기류와 부정적인 상관관계를 보임을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 유사성과 함께 부착토우가 부장된 적석목곽묘와 석곽묘 사이에 시기, 토우부착토기의 기종, 그리고 묘형, 묘곽 규모, 피장자의 사회적 위치 등에 있어 일련의 차이도 발견되었다. 따라서 부착토우 부장 적석목곽묘와 석곽묘 사이의 차이는 손명순(2015)의 견해처럼 단순히 시기적 차이로만 볼 수 없고, 시기적 차이와 함께 피장자의 사회적 범주를 복합적으로 고려해 이해할 필요가 있다.

Much attention has been paid to the artistic characteristic and symbolic meaning of clay figurines attached to Silla pottery. On the other hand, it was almost impossible to study the archaeological contexts where such figurines had been found, for lack of information provided through proper excavation reports. It was under these circumstances that detailed information about those clay figurines and their archaeological contexts was provided through the recently published excavation report of the Jjoksaem site in central Gyeongju. By comparing the Jjoksaem site with previously roughly reported sites, therefore, this study attempts to understand typological, temporal and social relationships between two different kinds of tombs where such clay figurines were buried as grave goods, namely, the wooden chamber tomb covered with a stone and earthen mound and the stone lined tombs. As a result, a series of differences in the typology and chronology of those burials, and the social status of those buried in the burials are suggested.
