청인 수어통역사의 수어통역에 대한 농인의 내러티브 연구

A Narrative Study of Deaf on Sign Language Interpretation by Sign Language Interpreter

본 연구는 제2언어로서 한국수어를 습득하여 수어통역사로 활동하고 있는 청인의 수어통역을 수어를 제1언어로 사용하는 농인이 어떻게 이해하고 있는지를 살펴보는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 이와 같은 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해 질적 사례연구 설계를 기반으로 하여 농인 당사자인 연구참여자의 내러티브를 분석하는 방법으로 연구를 수행하였다. 연구 결과, 청인 수어통역사의 수어통역과 관련해 여러 가지 의사소통의 문제들이 파악되었을 뿐만 아니라 통역의 과정에서 나타난 문제들을 확인할 수 있었다. 청인 수어통역사들은 비수지 기호에 대한 이해 부족과 농인들이 실제 생활에서 사용하고 있는 수어와 다른, 한국어 대응방식이 통역 장면에서 광범위하게 나타나고 있었다. 특히 청인 수어통역사의 수어통역 태도와 관련해서 주목해야 할 결과들이 도출되었는데 ‘오해’, ‘과도한 간섭’, ‘무례함’, ‘사생활 노출’이 나타났다. 청인 수어통역사의 수어통역에 대한 이해 정도는 ‘모호함’, ‘의문이 제기됨’, ‘일시적으로 중단시킴’, ‘부적절함’으로 나타났다. 이상의 연구 결과를 바탕으로 여섯 가지 실천적 제언을 제시하였다.

The purpose of this study is to examine how deaf, whose first language is sign language, understands sign language interpretation of hearing sign language interpreter using sign language as their second language. To achieve this purpose, this study was designed as a qualitative case study and performed by analyzing the narratives of deaf as the participants. As a result, several communication problems related to hearing sign language interpreter s sign language interpretation and issues in interpretation process have been discovered. Hearing sign language interpreters poor understanding of non-manual signals and Korean ways of response, which is different to sign language used in real life, were widely found. In particular , in terms of the attitude of sign language interpreters who are hearing people, many noticeable results were found: “misunderstanding,” “excessive interference,” and “exposure of privacy.” Level of understanding of interpretation by deafs were “ambiguity,” “question raised,” “interpretation interrupted temporarily,” and “inappropriateness.” Based on the results above, this study presents six practical suggestions.
