예수재의 의문 구성과 의례 설행의 특성 -의문 자료와 청련사 예수재를 중심으로-

The characteristic of the ritual program and performance of Yesujae - Focusing on the ritual texts and Yesujae at Cheongnyeonsa -

불교에는 중생을 구제하는 다양한 방법이 방편으로 제시되어 있다. 그 중 예수재는 사후에 다른 이들이 망자를 위해 시설하는 칠칠재(사십구재)를 본인이 살아 있을 때 직접 닦는 의례이다. 이 글은 예수재 의문의 구성과 설행의 특성을 살펴보고자 하는 목적으로 쓰였다. 첫째 예수재의 의례가 성립된 것은 일반적인 시왕 신앙이나 예수 신앙의 측면이 아니라, 의문의 명칭에서 확인되듯이 수륙재 찬요(중례문)의 명부 시왕을 중심으로 한 수륙재의 형태로 16세기 초반 국내에서 성립되었다는 것을 증명하였다. 둘째 예수재 의문은 천신의 공양이 중심이며, 소청과 예경의 차서와 위격의 변화가 일어나며, 의문과 달리 의식 설행은 현실적인 형편에 따라 설행되며, 화청으로 의례의 재설이 일어나고 있고, 금강경이 염송된다는 것이다. 셋째 의례 설행의 특성에 대해서는 양주 청련사 예수재 의문과 의례를 바탕으로 하였는데, 이는 다시 의문과 설행의 측면으로 나눠 분석하면, 의문의 측면으로는 어산 상진의 범패 계통이 드러나고, 현실적인 요소와 의문의 권위가 동시 반영되고 있고, 예의와 의례의 형식이 중시되고 있으며, 설행의 측면으로는 청련사라는 단일 사찰의 상주 승려들이 다 함께 의례에 참여한다는 것, 탁월한 능력을 가진 범패 어장 상진이 주도한다는 것, 사찰 당우와 중정(中庭)이 최대한 활용되고 있다는 특성을 찾을 수 있다.

Buddhism has a variety of ways to relieve mankind, so-called expedient, one of which, Yesujae (預修齋) is a kind of Chilchiljae(七七齋, the weekly ritual for seven weeks). People perform Chilchiljae in order to pray for the deceased to be reborn in Buddha’s land while Yesujae is the ritual that one performs for oneself during life. This writing considers the characteristic of the ritual program and performance of Yesujae. Initially, It is demonstrated that Yesujae was established as the form of Suryukjae(水陸齋, the offering ritual for land and water) in the early 16th century, revolving around the ten kings of hell in Chanyo(纂要, the compilation of the gist) of Suryukjae, far from general belief of the ten kings or that of Yesu. Later the ritual oration(儀文) changes and becomes an offering to the aheavenly gods while Socheong(召請, invitation) and Yegyeong(禮敬, worship) undergo the change in their order and hierarchy. The ritual performance is practiced according to the circumstances unlike the ritual oration and rebuild into Hwachung(和請, Buddhist gospel song). Also, The Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra) is recited. The ritual oration and performance of Yesujae at Cheongnyeonsa is mainly examined on their characteristic. As for the characteristic of the ritual oration, the line of Eosan (the monks or nuns singing a Buddhist ritual song) Sangjin’s Beompae(梵唄, the Buddhist music) is identified and both the element of reality and authentic ritual oration are reflected. Emphasis is placed upon the proprieties and formality. As a feature of its ritual performance, all monks resident in Cheongnyeonsa together take part in the ritual while the head Esan Sangjin of exceptional ability of Beompae is in control of the ritual. The ritual also takes full advantage of all the buildings and the courtyard at the temple.
