중국 신문에 보이는 3.1운동의 전개과정과 의미 - 북경 『국민공보』를 중심으로 -

The Development Process and Meaning of the 3.1 Movement in Chinese Newspapers - Focusing on the Guomingongbao(國民公報) in Beijing-

3.1운동에 대한 외국의 언론보도는 한국독립운동의 위상을 높이는 데 중요한 촉매제 역할을 하였다. 이 글은 일본제국주의 지배에서 벗어나 독립을 선언하기까지의 그 원인과 과정을 중국 북경에서 발행한 󰡔國民公報󰡕를 통해서 살펴보았다. 국내에서 발행되었던 조선총독부 기관지 󰡔每日新報󰡕에서 왜곡되었던 모습을 󰡔국민공보󰡕를 통해서 독립선언의 원인 가운데 가장 컸던 일본제국주의의 학정과 3.1운동 전개과정에서 벌어졌던 각종 반인륜적인 행위를 볼 수 있었다. 뿐만 아니라 그러한 탄압과 학살 속에서도 혁명의 열기를 지속적으로 이어나갔던 한국인들에게 대한 평가와 중국인들이 향후 가져야 할 자세에 대해서도 언급하였다. 이 신문은 3.1운동을 단순히 보도만 한 것이 아니라 중국의 처지가 한국과 크게 다르지 않으며 반제국주의에 중국이 어떻게 대항해야 하는 지를 3.1운동을 통해서 전달하려 했던 것 같다. 중국 지식인들은 이미 한국의 독립운동이 자신들과 밀접하였음을 이미 깨닫고 있었던 것이다.

Foreign media coverage of the March 1 Independence Movement played an important catalyst in enhancing the status of the Korean independence movement. This article looked at the causes and processes of the Japanese imperialism and declared independence through a book published in Beijing, China. The Guomigonbao(國民公報) in Beijing, the official newspaper of the Joseon Governor-General s Office, showed distorted images of the Japanese colonial rule, which was the biggest cause of the Declaration of Independence, and various anti-humanitarian acts during the March 1 Independence Movement. He also mentioned the evaluation of Koreans who continued to enjoy the heat of the revolution in the face of such oppression and slaughter and the position that the Chinese people should have in the future. The paper did not just cover the March 1 Independence Movement, but apparently tried to convey through the March 1 Independence Movement how China s situation is not much different from Korea s and should counter anti-imperialism. Chinese intellectuals were already realizing that Korea s independence movement was close to them.
