초등학교 3∼6학년 학생들의 ‘쓰레기 분리수거’에 대한 인식 조사 - 자원 재활용성 및 과학의 물질 분류 관점에서 -

3rd to 6th Grade Elementary School Students‘ Conception about ‘Waste Sorting and Collection’- From the Viewpoint of Recyclability and Material Classification in Science -

본 연구는 초등학교 3~6학년 학생들을 대상으로 ‘쓰레기 분리수거’에 대해 어떻게 인식하고 있는지 조사하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 설문지를 토대로 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 참여한 3~6학년 초등학생들의 80% 이상이 제시한 쓰레기에 대해 적합한 ‘쓰레기 수거함’을 골랐으며, 다시 이들 중 약 89% 이상이 ‘적절한 이유’를 들어 쓰레기 수거함을 선택하였다. 그러나 비록 낮은 수치이지만 물질에 대한 이해 부족, 용어에 대한 오해 그리고 재활용성에 대한 인식 부족 등으로 올바른 ‘쓰레기 수거함’을 고르지 못한 경우가 있었다. 둘째, ‘PET병’에 대해서는 ‘플라스틱류 수거함’을 선택한 학생이 187명(66.5%)으로 다소 낮은 수치를 보여주었는데, 이 경우는 학생들이 용어에 대한 이해가 부족하거나 재질을 잘못 이해해서 나타난 결과로 추측해 볼 수 있었다. 셋째, ‘아이스크림 종이 껍질’의 경우는 물질 분류와 재활용성의 복합적인 요인 때문에 ‘일반쓰레기’를 선택한 학생이 30명(10.7%)으로 다소 많은 편이었다. 넷째, 쓰레기를 분리수거하면서 어디에 버려야 할지 고민했던 이유가 다양하게 제시(전체 164건)되었다. 이상의 결과를 바탕으로 교육적 시사점에 대해 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of waste sorting and collection for elementary school students in grades 3~6. The results of the analysis based on the questionnaire contents are as follows. First, more than 80% of elementary school students in grades 3~6 selected a suitable waste bin for the proposed wastes. Furthermore, more than 89% out of them chose it with proper reasons . However, even though it was low percentage, there were cases in which the suitable waste bin was not picked up due to lack of understanding for the material, misunderstandings about the terms, and lack of awareness of recyclability. Second, for the PET bottle , just 187 students (66.5%, lower than normal) selected plastic waste bin . In this case, it was assumed that the some students misunderstood the term ‘PET’ or misunderstood the raw material of the ‘PET’. Third, 30 students (10.7%) selected general waste bin for the ice cream paper peels because of the mixed difficulties in classification and recyclability. And it was a relatively high percentage. Fourth, there were various reasons that why it was difficult to pick-up a waste bin (164 in total). Based on the above results, educational issues were discussed.
