말레이시아는 인도차이나 반도 남쪽, 말레이 반도에 위치하고 있다. 따라서 지정학적으로 동남아시아 지역을 비롯한 중동 진출을 위한 중요한 교두보 국가이다. 더욱이 주변 역내 국가들과 비교하여 1인당 국민 소득이 상대적으로 높은 중진국에 속한다. 말레이시아는 영어가 공영어로 사용되는 영어 경제 권역에 속하며 개방형의 시장 구조를 갖추고 있다. 아울러 자국 내 인구 대비 중산 계층의 비율이 상당히 높아 비교적 안정적인 내수시장을 확보하고 있다. 또한 말레이시아는 에너지 자원 부국으로 석유 산업을 비롯한 가스 산업 그리고 제조업 등이 발달하였다. 그리고 정부 차원의 인프라 프로젝트가 장기적으로 계획 되어 현재 활발히 진행되고 있다. 한편 온라인 시스템도 발달되어 인터넷 플랫폼 등도 활성화되고 있다. 따라서 향후 말레이시아와의 교역 확대를 위한 다양한 산업들을 고찰하였고, 여러 가지 관련 방안 모색을 위해 말레이시아의 통상 현황과 협정 그리고 관련 정책들을 상세히 살펴보았다.
