본 연구는 웹툰에 나타난 이계 방문 서사의 특징이 귀환을 거부하는 전복성에 있으며, 이러한 서사가 대안 담론의 생성에 기여하고 있음을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 조지프 캠벨의 영웅의 여정은 회귀로 마무리되지만, 웹툰에 나타난 이계 방문 서사의 주인공은 출발점으로 귀환하지 않는다. 이들은 자신이 발견한 새로운 세계를 있는 그대로 받아들이며 그곳에 머물기를 선택한다. 예비된 장소를 거부한 주인공에게는 광활한 빈 공간만이 기다리지만, 그는 사람을 얻고 공동체를 이룸으로써 자신이 정주할 내면적 장소를 스스로 손에 넣는다. 결과적으로 한국 웹툰에 나타나는 이계 방문 모티프의 서사는 청소년 소설을 비롯한 기존 서사 매체의 계도적이고 교조적인 서사와 변별적 구조를 보인다. 기존 매체의 일방향적 서사에서 소외되어 온 주체들은 웹툰을 통해 자신들의 서사를 공유함으로써 대안 담론을 만들어가고 있으며, 이는 대중서사로서 한국 웹툰이 갖는 가능성을 보여준다.
The aim of this study is to reveal that the characteristic of ‘Visit to the Unknown World’ narrative in Korean webtoon has reversibility refusing to return their homeground, which contributes to the creation of alternative discussion. While the Hero’s Journey of J. Cambell ends with the return to the homeland bringing the gift or the Goddess, the main characters in Korean webtoon does not pursue to reconcile with the society and also not return to the start line of the narrative. The players alienated from the old media’s unilateral growing-up narratives share their own growing-up narratives via new media, namely webtoons, and make alternative discourse, which represents the potential of Korean webtoon as a public narrative.
