The Use of Cognitive Evaluation Tools by Korean Occupational Therapists: A Pilot Study

The purpose of this study was to investigate the cognitive assessment tools and computerized cognitive rehabilitation programs used by occupational therapists in South Korea. From June 13, 2017 to July 5, 2017, a questionnaire was distributed to occupational therapists in D, a metropolitan city in South Korea. The questionnaire probed the characteristics of the respondents and the evaluation information of their patients, along with the cognitive assessment tools and the computerized cognitive rehabilitation programs that they employ in their therapeutic work. These occupational therapists were treating stroke patients in a D Metropolitan City area hospital and performing evaluations of their patients at monthly intervals. The cognitive assessment tools used by the occupational therapist were the Korean versions of the Mini Mental Status Examination (MMSE-K), the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS), and the Lowenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA). While the occupational therapist utilized the computerizd cognitive rehabilitation programs RehaCom and CoTras in their work. In addition, evaluation tools that occupational therapists wanted to learn included the Korean versions of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-K) and the Allen Cognitive Level Screen (ACLS). The results of this study can be used as important basic data for improving the training and professionalism of occupational therapists in South Korea.
