무용에서의 제스처 분석모델 연구 : 미술전시 <Restless Gestures>를 기반으로

A Study on Gesture Analysis Model in Dance : Based on the Art Exhibitions ‘Restless Gestures’

제스처는 신체를 통한 근원적인 표현 도구이자 상징적인 의미전달 체계이며 동시에 인간의 인지작용 기제이다. 이러한 제스처에 대한 논의는 신체언어에서 예술적인 퍼포먼스까지 다양한 인간의 활동과 연결되어 주제화되고 있다. 본 연구는 2017년 노르웨이 오슬로에서 전시된 <Restless Gestures> 를 사례연구와 내용분석이라는 연구방법을 통해 분석하고, 미술담론과 미술전시를 통해 제시되는 제스처에 대한 논의를 무용 영역으로 확장하여 제스처 분석을 위한 시사점을 도출하고자 한다. 노르웨이 국립미술관의 <Restless gestures> 전시는 제스처를 크게 ‘초현실주의적 제스처, 표현적 제스처, 최소한의 제스처, 텍스트적 제스처’ 네 가지로 구분하고 있다. 제스처에 대한 이 네 가지 접근은 미술과 무용에 국한된 것이 아니라 예술사조적 특성을 보여주는 것으로 제스처를 포함한 인간의 사고와 실천에 관한 사조적 흐름을 반영한다. 본 연구의 결과로 미술전시에서 제시되고 있는 제스처에 대한 네 가지 흐름은 무용분석의 요소들로 파악이 가능하며, 이는 하나의 무용에서 모두 나타나야 하는 요소들로 이해할 필요가 있다. 이에 기초할 때 첫째, 무용수의 내면과 무의식이 얼마나 자유롭게 표출되고 있는가, 둘째, 무용수의 감정이 잘 표현되고 있는가, 셋째, 절제와 여백의 미학이 표현과 더불어 얼마나 균형적으로 이루어지고 있는가, 넷째, 퍼포먼스가 주제와 텍스트를 반영하고 있는가를 검토할 필요가 있다. 이러한 결론의 도출은 무용분석, 무용비평, 그리고 무용교육의 이론적이고 철학적인 방향을 제시한다.

A gesture is a fundamental expressive tool through the body, a symbolic semantic communication system, and a human cognitive mechanism. Discussions about these gestures are being articulated in connection with various human activities ranging from body language to artistic performances. This study analyzes the art exhibitions <Restless Gestures> was exhibited in Oslo, Norway in 2017, through the research method of case study and content analysis. The purpose of this study is to extend the discussions about gestures presented through art discourse and art exhibition to the area of dance to derive implications for gesture analysis in dance. The art exhibition <Restless gestures> at the National Gallery of Norway distinguishes gestures in four broad categories: surrealistic gestures, expressive gestures, minimal gestures, and textual gestures. As a result of this study, four trends of gesture presented in art exhibition can be understood as elements of dance analysis. On the basis of this, first, how freely the inner and the unconscious of the dancer are expressed, second, whether the dancer s feelings are expressed well, third, how the aesthetics of the temperance and the blank are balanced with expression, fourth, whether a performance reflects the topic and text needs to be examined. This conclusion derives the theoretical and philosophical direction of dance analysis, dance criticism, and dance education.
