‘웹툰(Webtoon)’의 교육적 활용가능성 탐색 : 조형성, 서사성, 상호작용성 측면을 중심으로

Exploration on the Applicability of ‘Webtoons’ for Education : Focusing on the Aspects of Formativity, Narrativity and Interactivity

모바일 활용이 급증하게 되면서, 현대사회의 생활문화는 급속하게 변하게 되었다. 현대인들은 모바일을 통해 소통하고, 정보를 획득하고 모바일 웹을 통해 영화, 게임, 드라마, 만화 등의 엔터테인먼트를 즐기고 있다. 특히 엔터테인먼트로서 ‘웹툰(webtoon)’은 최근 들어 큰 인기를 끌어 세간의 주목을 받고 있어 학계에서도 관심이 집중되고 있는 현황이다. 웹툰의 부가가치적인 측면과 더불어 사회문화적인 해석과 웹툰이 지니고 있는 고유의 예술성 등 웹툰의 발전가능성 및 활용방안에 대하여 논의하고 있지만 교육적 논의는 아직 미비한 현황이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 문헌연구를 통해 웹툰의 특징을 추출하여 교육적 활용이 가능한 요소들을 탐색해보고자 한다. 먼저 웹툰의 교육적 활용 가능성 여부를 판단하기 위하여 웹툰의 근간인 만화(cartoon)와 웹(web)의 교육적 활용사례를 분석하여 웹툰의 교육적 활용가능성을 유추하였다. 다음으로 현재 논의되고 있는 웹툰의 다양한 특징들 속에서 교육에 활용될 수 있는 요소 3가지(조형성, 서사성, 상호작용성)를 추출하였다. 웹툰의 특징 3가지 요소를 교육환경에서 활용하게 되면 학습자의 주의집중, 흥미유발. 비판적 시각, 미적체험. 참여, 공유 등의 교육적 효과를 기대할 수 있었음을 도출할 수 있었다. 궁극적으로 본 연구가 지향하는 바는 학습자 연령층에서 큰 인기를 끌고 있는 웹툰을 차세대 교육적 소재로써 그 가능성을 시사하고자 하는 것이다.

Along with the dramatic increase of internet use, the climate of living is also changing rapidly in this contemporary society. Contemporaries are communicating with each other and obtaining information through their mobile and enjoying the objects of entertainment on the mobile web such as movies, games, dramas, and cartoons. Among the objects of entertainment, lately, ‘webtoons’ are becoming very popular. Although they have been discussing webtoons’ added value, socio-cultural interpretation, or unique artistic value in different sectors of our society in order to develop and utilize webtoons in many ways, their educational value has hardly been studied yet. The purpose of this study is to figure out webtoons’ characteristics and explore the elements of them which can be applied to education. Many characteristics of webtoons presently being discussed, this researcher extracted three elements applicable to education, formativity, narrativity, and interactivity. This study has found that if those three elements of webtoons are used in educational environment, it is possible to gain educational effects, for example, increasing learners’ concentration and interest, developing their critical viewpoint, letting them have aesthetic experience, or encouraging their participation and sharing. What this researcher ultimately pursues here is to suggest the possibility of using webtoons extremely popular among student groups nowadays as next-generation material for education.
