박물관 해설의 토폴로지 : 어린이 대상 전시해설을 중심으로

On the Topology of Explanation in Museum : Focus on the Explanation for Children

박물관에서 전시해설은 단순히 전시물을 설명하는 것이 아니라 관람객을 전시물의 세계로 이끌어냄으로써 관람객과 전시물 사이의 상호작용을 일으키는 매개 역할을 한다. 이러한 상호작용은 학습이라는 과정을 생성한다는 점에서 교육적이라고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 전시해설이 반드시 이러한 상호작용을 돕는 것은 아니다. 때때로 관람객과 전시물의 관계를 분리하기도 한다. 자기학습을 통한 교육적 성장을 오히려 방해하는 것이다. 이러한 이유로 에듀케이터와 도슨트 사이에는 보이지 않는 긴장 관계가 상존한다. 전시해설이 반드시 필요한가에 대한 논의가 지속적으로 제기되고 있는 이유이다. 그러나 박물관에 밀려드는 관람객과 박물관의 교육적 기능 때문에 박물관에서는 해설을 포기하기 어려운 상황이다. 이 논문은 박물관과 박물관교육에서 논란되고 있는 해설의 위치를 읽어냄으로써 박물관에서의 해설이 올바른 위치를 찾는 자기 찾기의 과정에서 시작되었다. 본 연구에서는 전시해설의 패러다임과 해석자로서의 도슨트의 역할에 대한 이론을 살펴본 뒤, 전시해설에 대한 주체들의 경험을 반구조화 인터뷰 기법에 따라 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 네 주체들인 도슨트, 관람객(어린이), 학부모, 학예사는 전시해설을 관람객과 전시물의 상호작용을 돕는 매개로 받아들였지만 각자 기대하는 해설의 수준과 방식은 상이했다. 이를 통해 여러 주체들의 다양한 요구와 기대를 적절히 수용할 수 있는 해설에 대한 교육적이고 전략적인 자리매김이 필요하며, 이를 위해서는 근본적으로 박물관 구조가 변해야 함을 시사한다.

Explanation of objects at museums does not mean to just deliver articles on exhibition. It enables viewers to interact with objects by entering the world of exhibition. This interaction can be considered educative thing in terms of making learning. However, there is some problem that exhibition explanation separates visitors from building a relationship with objects. In other words, it disturbs their educational growth through self-learning. Because of this, there is strained relations between educators and docents. Therefore, the issue of the necessity for explanation has been raised. However, museums can not give up an exhibition explanation because of the large volume of visitors and educational functions of museums. This study began to searching for self-discovery that can read the right position of explanation. To accomplish this goal, this study examined the preceding research about the role of docent as the interpreter, and then took a closer look at the experiences of various subjects by using semi-structured interview. As a result, all subjects -docents, visitors(children), their parents, educator- recognized explanation as the educational medium for helping interaction between visitors and objects at museums. On the other hand, subjects have different expectations about the method and level of explanation. This research confirmed, strategic explanation will be in demand to suit individual needs and the structural system of museum has to be changed.
